Daily Mirror and The Times

There was much controversy as a result of the 2016 election in which Trump was elected as the new President come the new year. Two examples of these different views were shown in The Daily Mirror and The Times, one a tabloid paper and the other a broadsheet.

The front cover of The Daily Mirror following Trump's election, as shown on the right, presents the Statue of Liberty as covering her face in shame in front of a gray, Cloverfield background with the clouds covering the last elements of blue sky and light. As Lady Liberty the symbol of freedom, The Daily Mirror expresses this irony with a strong image of her deep embarrassment. The grayscale adds to the lack of freedom, because the turned-green copper Statue represents freedom, so the lack of green shows that America's freedom has been drained out.

The Daily Mirror has also put the headline in full capital letters and in a red colour to signify the danger and shock of it being "President Trump." There is also an ellipses on the end due to it being an unexpected outcome.

This would allow everyone everyone to expect their front page to be in favour of the election. However, their front cover does not seem to be taking pride in Trump's being elected, but instead keeps it fairly neutral, with even The Independent expressing more views on the subject. The wrap-around cover shows Trump holding up his fist. This represents the power he now has as President. The cover also shows Vice President Mike Pence clapping in what should be happiness, but instead looks more stoic.
